Air Fryer Salmon served and ready to eat

Air Fryer Salmon changed how often we eat fish on weeknights, plain and simple. Six minutes of prep, under ten minutes in the basket, and you get fillets with a lightly crisp top and a buttery, flaky center. It’s the kind of dinner I can pull off even when I forgot to plan one.

The air fryer’s circulating heat cooks salmon fast and even, so there’s no need to flip it and risk the fillet falling apart. Salmon is done at 145°F, where it flakes easily with a fork. A lot of cooks (me included) pull it a touch early, around 125 to 130°F, for a silkier medium center, then let it rest a few minutes so it finishes cooking from the residual heat. Both are safe calls, and it comes down to the texture you like.

The seasoning is barely a seasoning: olive oil, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper rubbed right onto the fillets. Skin on or off both work. A squeeze of lemon at the end wakes the whole thing up, and you’ve got a real dinner with almost nothing to wash.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Ready in under 10 minutes. From basket to plate faster than most sides, with barely any prep.
  • Flaky and buttery. The circulating heat cooks the fillet evenly so it stays moist in the middle.
  • Barely any cleanup. No pan to scrub, just the basket and a cutting board.
  • Naturally lean. Good protein, a little olive oil, and simple pantry seasonings.

Air Fryer Salmon Ingredients

Fresh or fully thawed fillets work best, and patting them dry before seasoning helps the oil and spices stick so the top can crisp. Try to buy fillets of even thickness so they finish at the same time.

  • 4 salmon fillets (about 6 oz each)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges

Recipe Variations

  • Brush the fillets with a mix of honey and soy sauce in the last 2 minutes for a quick glazed version.
  • Swap the paprika and garlic for a Cajun or lemon-pepper blend to change up the flavor.
  • Use the same method for cod, tilapia, or trout, adjusting the time up or down for thickness.

How to Make Air Fryer Salmon

  1. Season the fillets: Pat the salmon fillets completely dry. Rub each one with the olive oil, then season all over with the garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  2. Preheat the basket: Preheat your basket air fryer to 400°F for about 3 minutes.
  3. Air fry the salmon: Place the fillets in the basket in a single layer, skin-side down, not touching. Air fry at 400°F for 7 to 9 minutes. No flipping needed.
  4. Check for doneness: Salmon is done at 145°F, where it flakes easily with a fork. For a medium center, pull it at 125 to 130°F. Thickness drives the time, so start checking at 7 minutes and remember models vary.
  5. Rest and serve: Let the fillets rest for 3 minutes off the heat; they’ll climb a few degrees as they sit. Serve with a squeeze of fresh lemon.

Recipe FAQs

Can I Cook Frozen Salmon in the Air Fryer?

Yes, add a few minutes to the cook time. Thawing first gives more even cooking and better seasoning, but frozen fillets will work if you’re in a hurry.

Do I Need to Flip the Salmon?

No. The circulating heat cooks it evenly from all sides, and flipping a delicate fillet usually just breaks it apart.

How Do I Know When Salmon Is Done?

It flakes easily with a fork and reads 145°F. For a softer, medium center, pull it around 125 to 130°F and let it rest.

Should I Leave the Skin On?

Either way works. Skin-side down protects the fillet and crisps up nicely; if you prefer skinless, cook it the same way.

Can I Use This for Other Fish, and What Sides Go with It?

Yes, fillets like cod or trout work with small time adjustments. Serve the salmon with rice, roasted asparagus, or a simple salad.

Cooking Tips

  • Buy fillets of even thickness, or fold the thin tail end under so the whole piece cooks at the same rate.
  • Line the basket with a piece of parchment cut to fit if your fillets tend to stick, but leave the edges clear so air still circulates.
  • Take the salmon out a few degrees before your target temperature. It keeps cooking as it rests, and that carryover is easy to overshoot.

Storage and Freezing

To store: Store cooked salmon in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

To freeze: Cooked salmon can be frozen for up to 2 months, though the texture softens a little once thawed. Fresh is better if you have the choice.

To reheat: Reheat gently in the air fryer at 350°F for 3 to 4 minutes, just until warmed. Overheating dries it out fast, so go low and check often.
